Where are Hip Hops Conscious artist? Over the past couple of years i’ve found that Conscious artist are going the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird,  extinct. Seems like everyone in Hip Hop is making dance songs or talking about thugging and drugs, that’s cool and all, but is it that Consciousness is not marketable anymore? Is the industry doing this for a reason, and if so why? Seems like the dumbing down of Hip Hop culture is at a all time high where every Hip Hop song has a negative message. i go through the city and i hear lil children singing “nine piece” or little girls dressing like mz menage and their parents bobbing their heads and laughing about it. The whole time I’m thinking to myself, really do we not have enough positive role models for children to follow? I’m not saying that Hip Hop artists are wrong for making the music they make, but the social commentary and Conscious that was hip hop is gone. Now the children aspire to be rappers and mimic the things they see on tv, not knowing right from wrong. We need more mos def’s in the game to make the pendulum of hip hop to be balanced. Gone are the days of having a message in Hip Hop music, what we see is the over sexual exploitation of our women and the lowering intelligence of our youth. There has to be a spot for Conscious artist out there some where, but right now i don’t see it happening until people are tired of the over glorification of death, ignorance and the tom foolery of which we call Hip Hop. i asked my mans cobra commander where are the Conscious mc’s in Hip Hop, his reply was “working 9 to 5′s”.
